Time Left to Snag a Tag

Attention geocachers: There are rumors of wild woolly mammoths being spotted all over the United States! Join the hunt to find one of your very own and earn your bones!

The game is simple: go to a location where a mammoth has been spotted. If you get there first, you will find a mammoth tag waiting for you. Please take the physical tag to keep as your own. You need to claim the tag as soon as possible so it can be removed from the map. You will then follow the instructions to redeem for a trackable geocoin prize that combines with the tag! How cool is that? The geocoin and tag are exclusive to this Mission Mammoth game.

If you would like to be a hider, a limited number of hider packs are on sale at Shop Geocaching.

Stay alert - and set an alert - because a mammoth may appear at any time and anywhere in the United States. Join our Facebook Group for game updates and announcements and follow the game on Instagram and Twitter.

Mammoth Coin

Redemption rules: Strictly one coin per household and family member; please do not grab more than one tag. There is no charge for the redemption geocoin, but you are responsible for any shipping charges. As a courtesy to other finders, please claim your tag immediately. Instructions for claiming are on the back of the tag. The geocoin must be claimed by May 31st, 2020.

It's not exactly an old historic site, but there is an unexpected. You do not even need Brigadier General Jack Smith travelling with you to an unknown southern state in order to find THE SECRET OF THE LOST TUNNEL (Hardy Boys #29) And, it is also a quaint, beautiful park to send a nice afternoon - or, as our family does - play in the creek!

Ellie May - the Waco Mammoth

Ellie May was found nearly in tact in a gravel pit outside in the town of Italy, Texas. She now resides in the Perot Museum in Dallas. This tag, dedicated to Ellie May resides

Standing as tall as 14 feet and weighing 20,000 pounds, Columbian mammoths roamed across what is present-day Texas thousands of years ago. Today, the fossil specimens represent the nation's first and only recorded evidence of a nursery herd of ice age Columbian mammoths.

The Columbian mammoth were herbivores and grazed throughout the open grasslands of north and central Texas. They coexisted with humans until 11,700 years ago when the mammoth died out. Several reasons have been postulated for their extinction including climate change, over hunting by humans and disease.

And here we are today, facing climate change and disease ourselves. History does have a way of repeating itself...

Everyone needs someone who will call and say, "Get dressed, we're going on an adventure!"

(placed in anticipation of Mission: Mammoth going on hiatus after tomorrow due to COVID-19)

Siberia is a vast region in northern Asia, stretching from the Ural Mountains in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east. To the north lies the Arctic Ocean; to the south lie Mongolia, China, and Central Asia. European Russians have been settling in Siberia for several centuries, but the region's original inhabitants were hunting, fishing, and herding peoples whose cultures were related to those of other northern groups, such as the Inuit of North America. Siberian mythology and religion reflected a world in which humans depended on and respected animals, believing that the animals had spirits and could change form.

The Evenk people had stories of mammoths, immense animals that roamed the land many, many years ago. They explained how these creatures had shaped the earth by moving mud with their tusks, created rivers where they walked, and formed lakes where they had lain down.

Be cautious as you enter the Temple of the Earth Shapers, adventurers! (Eastern pillar ruins. 3 of 5.)

cron publish 2 days 19 hours ago 433 - The Mammoth's Remains

Palmetto Rd, Belleair, FL, US

The appearance and behavior of the Woolly Mammoth species are among the best studied of any prehistoric animal, mostly due to the discovery of frozen carcasses in Siberia and Alaska. Mammoth remains had long been known in Asia before they became known to Europeans in the 17th century. It was not till recently that Woolly Mammoth remains were found within massive tree trunks and limbs located in hidden tropical forests and gardens of the south. Trees that have grown around these remains, entombing them for millennia, are only now being discovered in a tiny garden nearby the Limestone Bluffs of Belleair. The gardens provide searchers the opportunity to step in and enter a place lost in time while searching for fossils remains.

Welcome to Lowe Volk Park. The building on this property is the Nature Center. There are some small native animals housed here and examples of rock fossils. The Wooly Mammoth is hidden in a small moss covered rock at the posted coordinates. Parking is available near GZ. There are some nice trails and traditional caches available on this property.

The following information was taken from this website. For more information follow the link:

https://ohiohistorycentral.org/w/Mastodon_and_Mammoth_Fossils

“Mammoths were elephants that are related to the modern Indian elephant. They were more slimly built than mastodons and were primarily grazing animals more common to grasslands. Although mammoth remains are not uncommon in Ohio, they are decidedly less common than are the remains of mastodons. Two species of mammoth have been recognized in Ohio: Mammuthus primigenius, the northern mammoth, and Mammuthus columbi, a more southerly species. Both mastodons and mammoths became extinct about 10,000 years ago.”

We have always been hiders but weren’t able to buy a package this time.

The kiddo REALLY liked the tags this time because they are studying Mammoths in school... or they were!

When one popped up not too awful far from us last weekend, we packed up and drove the nearly 3 hours. About 5 minutes out, the tag was claimed. We knew this was a risk and hoped more would publish somewhat close and soon.

When this one popped up, we headed right out... holding our breath!

Made it to the park only to find the trails were closed. But we found a park authority individual and he assured us that the walking trails were NOT, only the biking trails.

So, we took off in hopes we were the only ones here.

Got a bit confused but finally found the sleeping mammoth right where she’s been for sooooo long! Blanket of pine needles still covering her and all.

Needless to say, the kiddo is over the moon!

Thanks for hiding this!

It's a little chilly and wet out and about today, but it was also my first day with a rotating early schedule so when I saw several of these had published i was intrigued. Most were too far away to justify chasing, but this once was right in my old stomping grounds.

Then my lunch ended and things got hectic at my essential workplace again and i forgot about mammoth hunting. Got home to the working- from- home isolated hubby and something ge said made me think of it again. I thought for it would be gone, but he agreed to come with me when i saw it still available. So we headed outside for some exercise. Apparently we were being socially distant on the trail lol (see pic). And then we happened to find a geocache container in a tree... and look...and behold... we found a wooly mammoth! Thanks for hiding him! We left you the container for future use.

Okay, we aren't actually the Mammoths, but wouldn't that be a cool mascot?? As it turns out, there is a school with a Mammoth mascot. Amherst College became the Mammoths in 2017. Even though we aren't the mammoths, a tag has made it to our campus.

This mammoth is hiding in the base of a unique statue on Mount Mercy's campus. You can park very close by.

Good luck and have fun!
